Holograph mock-up of artists' book conceived and designed in the 1950s and published in 1983 as: Mud book / by John Cage and Lois Long. New York : Callaway Editions ; London : David Grob Editions. In the published work, text and ill. are screenprinted throughout. With related graphic and manuscript materials from the 1950s and proofs of the published work, presumably from the time of publication in 1983. Mock-up: 1 vol. (40 p. : chiefly ill. ; 13 cm.). Contains gouache and watercolor drawings by Lois Long in brown, black, yellow and white, with text hand-lettered in black ink; pages numbered in pencil, including covers. Several leaves glued together to conceal unused sketches (between p. 7 and 8, 9 and 10, 27 and 28, and 35 and 36; p. 27-28 have been separated). Two pages include collaged newspaper fragments, which differ from those reproduced in the published work. Enclosed in folder (15 cm.) constructed from corrugated cardboard and tape, inscribed in ink: "Mud book original." Proofs: 6 prints : serigraph, col. ; 14 x 27 cm. Proofs of 5 double-page spreads and last page. Manuscript drafts and sketches: 3 sheets, 24 x 22 cm.; 1 envelope, folded to 18 x 17 cm.; 6 sheets, 26 x 13 cm.; 3 folded sheets, 13 x 13 cm. Include ms. drafts of text by Cage, in pencil and black ink; ms. drafts of text by Long, in red ink and pencil, with sketches chiefly in pencil; original gouache sketches by Long, with draft of portions of text and layout designs in pencil. The ms. drafts by Cage include an unused text for a 24-page illustrated book and further mud cake recipes. As acquired, enclosed in green clasp envelope with sheet of Lois Long's notepaper attached, inscribed: "Original Mud book. Very important. Not to give away."
